On November 4th, Adam Moritz and Benjamin Laufer hosted Wine as Experience, a blind wine tasting and workshop inspired by John Dewey’s text Art as Experience. It was hosted at Index’s new beautiful space in Greenpoint.

Palate cleansers were offered by The Northeast Larder Project – white kimchi, lacto-grapes, and french breakfast radish pickles, all sourced from the local greenmarket and fermented in close proximity to the old steam radiators in Benjamin’s apartment.

Working in pairs, individuals attempted to disclose and catalog their subjective experience of taste. One partner tasted Wine A, and the other Wine B, before switching. The two wines were related, but distinct. Pairs, situated at tables of indistinguishable chatter, developed singular languages to explore the similarities and differences in the wine, and in their phenomenological account of them.

Below are the notes participants took over the course of the evening.
